The Chronicles of Broken Beaker :: The Adolescent Journey of Broken Beaker

This thing has been in my draft folder for quite a while now and never got around to finish it. I don't know what got on to me so I start writing it again. I guess I'm just a sentimental freak.

The Chronicles of a Broken Beaker

--The Adolescent Journey of Broken Beaker--

My life sort of began when I was 4 because technically speaking because you are not conscious of your life until you reach age 3 or 4. – However, I don’t really have any solid memories of my childhood. Because they are all fucking dull and gloom.

I grew up in a big family in a very big house. Yes. The house has been there for at lease 5 decades. It’s a wooden house, sitting on an elongated 60m by 200m land. No kidding. It’s a fucking big house. It has 8 bedrooms, 2 big living rooms, 3 bathrooms, and 3 outhouses. Isn’t that great? I lived there with my grandmother, of course mum and dad and sis and bro, my single aunt, single uncle and my grandma’s brother’s family. I don’t know what you call that. The whole house was just a fucking chaos. There’s nothing fun about it. – I lived there until I was in primary 4, when I was about 11 years old when my grandmother decided she wanted to move to a quieter area, and so did my parents.

Growing up in that sort of conditions isn’t great means you don’t have your own privacy, not that I needed one at that age, and you are constantly under the pressure of other family members. If I happen to wake up one hour later than my usual wake up time, I will be told off. If I didn’t get good results at school, everyone in the house will know. It’s like that.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I have a brother, who is 7 years older than me, and a sister who is 4 years older. Since I am the youngest, my parents, especially my mum always gave me special attention, and of course, my bother and my sis aren’t very happy about that. They despised me because they think I am spoilt, which I probably am. I basically can get what I want but under the pressure of my brother and sister, I usually don’t ask for much because I don’t want them to think I am treated any different. How mature. My brother is like a stranger to me. We just don’t talk much I don’t know why. When I was in primary school, he’s already in secondary school. In my teenage years when I kinda need like a male role model, my brother is already out of the house to attend university. So I never really have any chance to get to know my bother and all that. But I still look up to him because he’s like the fucking cult hero of the family. Everybody liked him.

On the contrary, I am rather close with my sister. My sister is the rebellious ones; she mix with people that parents usually won’t approve. But I thought that she’s kinda cool you know, hang out with all the cool people and listen to cool music. She was the one who kinda got me into listening to music at a very young age, like Nirvana and Metallica.

I also have 2 cousins of the same age, Alex being the older one, was born in early 1984, then me, born in April the same year, then there is Aaron, who joined us later that year around August.

1984 is the year of Rat – according to the Chinese calendar thing, and we have been dubbed the head, body and tail of a rat. Alex is the oldest but the shortest – so he is the head of a rat. I, the middle height between the three of us - am the body of a rat and finally Aaron, being the youngest and the tallest, hence the long tail of a rat. Seems perfectly logical.

We went to the same kindergarten and we used to hang out like almost everyday after school. We are the also the most rebellious ones in the family. Well boys will be boys. But anyway, we were close like real brothers, and we even made a vow that we will help each other whenever whoever is in trouble and we swear we will never betray each other. Seemed like the kind of things kids would do, and under the influence of those Hong Kong mafia movies, we actually though we are supposed to die for each other.

I was always the brightest in the three of us. I got good result at school, I have good manners, and I get up early everyday during the holidays to help around at the house. On the contrast, Alex, is the more rebellious one who hardly ever listens to anyone – and was also the mastermind behind our actions. Aaron is not the brightest ones but he’s not the rebellious one either. He is the youngest – plain and simple. Everybody loved him. Having said that, if we happen to do something wrong, Alex is the most likely to get scolded, then me and Aaron is the least likely ones. It has always been like this. When something happened, Alex will be blamed for involving us, then I will be punished, then Aaron will go home safely.

When we were kids, we used to sneak around the house; we used to secretly climb over the fence to the supermarket across the roads to get chocolates although our grandmother told us not to, we used to have mud fight during the rain seasons and got home dirty and tired.

During Primary school, we don’t see each other all that often because we all went to different school. But we still get to hang out maybe once or twice a week, mostly sleepover at my grandmother’s house. I remember there was one time when my grandma was having afternoon nap, we decided to play the scary game. There were 4 rooms in the house and each of us will take care of a room, making it look scary, then we would visit the room and get scared – which is kinda stupid. But anyway, I can’t remember who, got really creative and stuffed up a glove with some cloth, and positioned in a way like the hand is holding a knife, and it’s holding a real pocket knife. And I don’t know why I did it but I was jumping on the bed where the knife is and I actually cut my leg and bled out gallons of blood and passed out. The bed was covered with my blood. And of course, this means Alex – is going to get into serious trouble.

But anyway, up till secondary school. That’s when everything changes. We hardly get in touch with each other because we kinda have our own circle of friends to deal with. It got to a point that we actually feel quite awkward to see each other in family gatherings. I guess it’s weird that we just drifted apart – just like that, and knowing we used to be so close, none of us knew what went wrong. But deep down though, we knew that we are still brother. Whatever.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I went to a primary school called St. Joseph Primary School. It’s a Christian school although I am not Christian. It has a church and priests and nuns and all that you know kinda freaky. Primary school was probably the toughest period of my childhood.

On my first day at school, I met Garret, which is not his real name but I’d like to call him that anyway and he didn’t seemed to mind, like I totally wouldn’t mind people calling me Rooney or Gerrard, but anyway he then become my best friend throughout 16 years of friendship. I remember it was the first day, and my parents were looking inside the window of the classroom to see how the class is going, and to make sure I met some friends, that I would be alright on my own. And I think that my parents are friends with his parents so they tried to set us up or something like that. I am not too sure, because I was only 8 and who gives a fuck at 8 years old. But that’s how we met; although we’ve only gotten closer in primary 5. At the same year, I also met Adrian, because my mum is kind of like mates with Adrian’s mum too. And we became fast friends. Adrian, Calvin and I always played together at school, or outside the school. And there, with a few connections of my parents, I have met my childhood friends – who then became people that define the idea of friendship for me as we grew up.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I have a girly name. It’s not my Chinese pronunciation that sounded girly, it’s when it’s translated into English that it sounded fucking girly. Don’t ask me how, but I have the girliest name a guy could probably have and it’s not funny - that’s one of the reasons why childhood has been so hard for me. I was constantly being insulted by my teachers and classmates for my FUCKING name.

Every morning before class starts, we will be assigned to clean up a specific area of the school. It’s okay if I were assigned to clean the curb, or to pick up rubbishes. But sometimes, when I get the toilets, my name will always be on the girl toilets rooster. And I always have to go to the prefect in charge to correct that mistake. And sometimes, they would laugh at me for having that name. Things got even worst when we have Physical education classes. The class will be divided into two lines, boys and girls, and the teacher would do the rows. When calling my name she would look at the girl’s row. And she would call my name again only to found out my raised hand is on the boy’s row. Then she would laugh. And someone standing behind me would say something like “Why don’t you stand over that row?” and giggles. I remembered once in Primary 4, my PE teacher asked me “Why would your parents give you such name” bitch.

I remembered there were a few times I came home from school and ask my mum to have my name changed to a more appropriate one. Then my mum would always tell me “it’s their mouth, you can’t control what they want to say, but you can choose to ignore it” She always says that. I was probably too young to understand the logic of what she said. I would get really angry and not talk to her. I only want my name changed so all the insults will stop. What is so hard about that? Well the thing is, if it were anybody’s fault, blame the doctor. When I was born, he left out a vowel on my name when he was filling my birth certificate and that made all the difference. I don’t know if anyone understands what sort of impact it has on me, living my early life, having everyone mock me because I have a girly name. It’s fucking depressing!

---------------------------------------------------------------

In primary 3, at the tender age of 10, I became the well known thief of my family who is obsessed with Dragon Ball and wagging classes. Allow me to elucidate, well kids loves superheroes. I love Dragon Ball, I mean literally obsessed with it. Goku would be my superhero in that case. Every two days in a week after school, we have Chinese classes. It’s like totally voluntary if you want sign up for the class or not, but if you do, you will have to go to every single class. Well my parents want me to know a little Chinese, so they signed me up for the class. But then I have more important things to do after school than learning the fucking Chinese calligraphy. I have to go across the road to get Dragon Ball cards, well you know those little credit card sized card you get from a machine, a dollar for each. I always go there after school to get the card, and going to Chinese class made it entirely impossible. So first off, I started skipping classes, which I thought is not really a fucking big deal. Then I got desperate, I used up all my pocket money vending the silly cards. But that wasn’t enough. I got more desperate and I want more, so I started to steal from my mum’s purse. Eventually she noticed some money missing, she started to ask if I had taken any money, and I would say no. And I stole again, she’d ask again, and I stole again. At one occasion, I met a guy who is older than me, probably 12 years old, he told me he could get me large amount of Dragon Ball Cards for a cheaper price. I was totally seduced. I ordered from him, and up to a point, I owed him RM300 dollars. I got desperate and I stole from my mum again. Little at a time. But there’s no way I could get 300 dollars without her noticing. And I was getting nervous as the seller kept pressuring me to pay him or he’ll tell his mother. I was desperate. I thought I am getting into a big trouble. I had no choice; I had to tell my mum. And I told her.

Surprisingly, she wasn’t mad at me at all. But my dad did. Don’t want to talk about it. But anyway, my mum called the seller up to settle the things. She though I have been manipulated and cheated. Those cards could not have possibly worth fucking 300 bucks, but of course I didn’t know at that time. All I see is cards, cards, cards, so many fucking cards I am convinced that I could live the rest of my life having those cards.

Although my mum did not get angry, I could fucking tell she’s really disappointed. I mean like when people are really frustrated, they’re speechless. That was what happened with her, she gave me a cold treatment which made me feel so bad. I so wished she’d say something rather than saying nothing at all – but the thing is her method worked on me. Shame, shame, shame.

But anyway, point is, every single human who lived under that fucking roof found out what happened and started giving me evils. My grandmother punished me, my uncle gave me a fucking lecture that I don’t fucking understand and my cousins laughed at me. It was fucking humiliating. They were like totally overreacted about it. Big deal.

In Primary 5, I upgraded from 4B to 5C. You see each year have 3 classes A, B and C. A is for like mentally challenged students while B is like for people who have a little sense of the world and C class which is like where all the bright ones, and the rich ones supposed to be.

At the beginning of the year, I bought a striped cream-grey color t-shirt and I wore it to school one day underneath the plain white school uniform which is quite see-through. During music class, students are sometimes required to sit on the floor in rows. And one of my classmates, Joanne saw what I was wearing and said to me “I have a shirt exactly like that, and I am not going to wear it anymore since you’re wearing it”. Ouch. I never wore that shirt again either.

Well, that year too, I sat next to a fucking female dinosaur called Jessica. Omg, I kid you not, she’s like the most horrible girl I’ve ever met in my life. She ate like pigs, she is dirty and she spreads her leg when she sits down and did I mention she’s fucking huge? She was really rude. She used to copy all my answers for mathematics test, but when I tried to copy her answer for English test, she shoved me away, what kind of bitch is that? – Megabitch. I was like totally traumatized by her. No joke. Anyway, my academic performance for that year is like 52nd place, out of 56 students. How depressing.

Sometime in primary 5, I met a dick called Fattgo, which is not his real name too but it suits him just fine – because he’s like totally fat and rude, just like your typical bully. He has a problem with people like me. That sort of people that does nothing to anybody but always ended up being bullied. I am not fond of him because he is so full of himself when he talk, and most of the times, all the things he talked about doesn’t really inform his actions. That means he is just so full of shit. Also, he is the first guy who taught me how to swear using a sentence rather than just a word – “Fucking Hell in the Neighborhood”, that’s it. I didn’t know what it meant at that time, but the way he said it made it sound so rude and so totally effective. But his character doesn’t end there in my life. It continues to unfold later in secondary school.

In that year, I started to hang out more often with Garret, Calvin, Adrian, and Angeleo and several others which I can’t be bothered to mention. We used to stay after school to play ping-pong and going to Dynasty Hotel or just play games, stupid games that kids play.

Primary 6 is like the final year of Primary school and it was also the time we sit for National exam called UPSR. I don’t want to go into that because it’s all boring stuff. That year, I was lucky to get away from lady dinosaur. I sat with Rowena, a really cool girl who swims nationally, I think, and right behind us is Elizabeth and Alvin. The four of us were like best friends; we do everything together; gossip together, eat lunch together, and play games together. They were like the coolest people ever. But the person sitting right in front of us is a totally different story. - Winnie, another bitch, not mega, but ain’t mini either. Sometime that year, she borrowed a CD from me; it was Cranberries’ To The Faithful Departed. After she listened to it, she said “How can you lend me something like that, the music is totally crap. How can you listen to something like that?” HELLO LADY???? I mean I didn’t fucking offer the CD to you. It was you who wanted to borrow it in the first place, don’t blame me if you prefer Take That more. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK.

Also in that year, everyone started asking everybody to write autographs; you know those fancy books where you write some cheesy stuff for remembrance. I’ve got some people nice enough to ask me for an autograph. I always find it funny no matter how clichéd up autographs are, they are still widely popular. But anyway, the most common things people write are stuff like “Remember me forever”, “Friends forever”, “King sails what ship and who sails what ship and we sail friendship” and etc etc. But at that time, do we really mean what we wrote? I certainly didn’t – I mean I was fucking glad it’s finally over you know, and trust me I wouldn’t want to see half of the people in primary school in my life ever again. You know, it’s more like a cool necessity to have a fucking autograph than the value of remembrance it holds.

---------------------------------------------------------------

In retrospect, at that time, Primary school has been hard for me, but also at that age, who would understand the value of friendship, who would understand the idea of life. Every kids went to school with the own set of prejudices about other people, prejudices they have been taught at home. That is why people say things that probably have hurt me, but it does not necessarily mean that they meant it. At that time, we weren’t taught to accept differences, because differences are aliens. Everybody thought we should be the same, and that is why if you happen to have a more noticeable difference than any other kids in school, you will be an outcast. I was different but not entirely different. I am a guy with a girl’s name. My dad doesn’t drive a fucking Mercedes to send me to school or pick me up from school. I wasn’t academically better than anyone else, and I am certainly not cool. It doesn’t sound all that different as I grew up, but as a kid, at the period where nobody understand shit about life, and the only reason you’ll be safe in school is determined by your social-status, I can’t help but wonder and ask myself why aren’t my dad rich, why didn’t I have a guy’s name, why can’t I be like him, why I am I so uncool? I envy that group of cool people who always hang out together, the rich kids and the rich kids. I so wish I could join that group so I am cool. I was like 11 years old for Christ’s sake. At that very young age, I already learnt the idea of shame, and disgrace. I was always lack of self confidence, which is why people always pick on me. I am not mischievous like other kids, which they thought I am a coward. And the accumulation of that made me who I am today.

It’s a phase where nothing means anything really but at the same time, it’s a significant phase of your life that will change you profoundly. At least it has changed mine. – The way you think about yourself and other people, the way you read the life, and before you know it, it casts a mould where your life principles take forms as you grow up.

The Bane of Our Existence

Bane

For one second there
My world stopped revolving
The clock stopped ticking
Everything just didn’t matter

And then it hit me
No, it just don't work this way
You had to go, and I had to go
We have lingered too long without an answer

You can deny it all you want, you know
Or you can ignore it

The thought of never knowing
It hurts me just the same

I get it
And I understand
You don’t have to say anything

Hell we know it’s not going to work
And we know it too well the pain we’ll have to endure
It’s a happiness we couldn’t afford
It’s a losing game we’re willing to play

In the wrong place and the wrong time
I thought we could get away with it
The idea was just too perfect too ignore.

But too bad,
We jump in too soon and we fall out too quickly
Who are we trying to fool?
It’s just the nature of it
No one could possibly pull that off

Don’t say your sorry (not from Madonna song please)
It’s nobody’s fault
When today’s dust turn into tomorrow’s
We’ll be on our way with mended hearts
And broken pieces of memories.

I am sorry though.

Break That Shit

The story of An Inconvinient Truth is plain and simple, a lecture in Environmental Science 101, given by the guy who lost to Bush on presidental election by 1 percent.

I would have to say, this documentary surprises me for it's simple but yet accessible presentation. Movies and documentaries about environmental is nothing new - and it's definitely worth your two hour time sitting in the cinema learning some facts that currently treating our generation. An Inconvinet Truth does it's job just fine as an environment concerned documentaries, especially when it is presented by someone who is powerful.

This documentary is based on science facts, yes hard, cold facts that has been presented in a rather fascinating way that probably made it so effective. It's not rocket science, and you don't necessarily need to have any sorts of science background to understand the facts here because everything is just plain and simple. The issue addressed here is rather compelling - it's a truth that most of us have probably take for granted for, or choose to deny it; our environment today is fragile, and from what I learnt from the movie is that if nothing is done - we are going to suffer the consequences.

One thing though, although this movie manifests itself as an movie about global warming, Al Gore is constatly being presented as a lone warrior trying to get that messege out and I truly believe that there are many people out there who take actions more than words. Another thing is, Al Gore + Global Warming - what can I say, Do I smell some political stance here? Definitely. Although I believe Al Gore has been very environmentally conscious, but I really can't help but to draw a relation to political issues here. Isn't it quite contradictory while Bush is declaring war against Iraq and fighting terrorism, Al Gore, in another hand is delivering issues about global warming?

Nevertheless - Republican or democrats, this movie is worth attending to.

From childhood wooden bags given by grandmother to the gigantic curvy-awkwardy Disney Music Hall, Sketches of Frank Gehry is a study of this architect's journey and achievemnts, with nonetheless the not so impressive hand-held camera, the soaring aerialsm and the slideshow glipmses omg-my-hang-is-shaking-so-bad sketches of Frank Gehry.

The documentary was pleasently entertaining (in a way for those who have some sorts of connection with this profession) and genuinely beguiling; most of the funnies are generated by the honesty for Frank Gehry himself: like when he said the memorable "This is so stupid looking it's great!" or the part where Gehry is deciding how many corrugation they should have on the facade. But the best quote in the movie would have to go to the amazing Bob Geldof, and I quote "If you meet an architect at a party, the best thing you can do is hit them"

What I really find interesting in this movie though is the process that Gehry goes through when designing building, those moments of uncertainties, those moments of "I hated it", those moments when you play around with the models, and the jokes about "why not have it here instead of there, why not do this instead of that" - I guess you really have to go through the pain of a design process to truly appreciate, and relate to the movie.

There's one thing I'm not too sure about this documentary though - it seemed a little too indulgent, it's like Gehry is trying to make a statement about his architectural style but in a blatant and subtle sort of way. But either way, it's a movie about him anyway.

In the end, Frank Gehry is still not my cup of tea.

I guess I must have forgotten how I felt when this event occured almost five years ago. I remembered, coincidentally I was watching CNN when the first plane hit the tower. Then I stayed up all night, following the news, constantly switching between CNN and BBC (thanks to Astro), befuddled and dumbfolded by the surreal sensation of it.

The first showing of the United 93's trailer aroused some controversy from viewers who felt that it is still too early to make a movie about September 11 - resulting the trailer being pulled out from several cinemas in New York. It's not hard to understand all the press about this kind of movie. To chronicle the events of the morning of Spetember 11 on film is to accept a set of inescapeable constraints. It is a dounting burden of responsibilities - to the facts, to the sentiments of immediate families, to the Americans and the political issue revolving around the subject matter. Prior to it's release, both the film and director Paul Greengrass were accused of exploiting real-life tragedy, not least because the events portrayed took place less than five years ago.

This film was shot with the usual Greengrass docudrama style - that relies on building up suspense and increasingly fragmented as the film accelerates. United 93 can be devided into two major interwoven parts - it's first half is primary concerned with depicting what went wrong on the ground, potrayed by mostly real-life characters. Devoid of any sensationalism, the second half speculates and re-enacts the hijacking of United Airlines Flight-93 by the Muslim terrorists - while the passengers struggle to retake the aircraft by force. The scene on the plane is probably the hardest part to watch. I can't help but quitely sobbing as the events unfolds - that is where I understood now why Americans think it is too soon. The scenes were brutal but at the same time convincing, it was a very successful real life portrayal that I think most of us, the spectators won't be able to understand, but at the same time, we could really relate to.

A lot of credits must go to the editing people. Some of the most disturbing scences were the subtle but sudden dissapeareance of one of the plane from the radar, and the disturbing murky voice that came out of nowhere saying "We have some planes". But I have to say, no matter how many times I have watch the plane hitting the tower, it still haunts me, and I still gasp everytime I see it.

Dramatic reconstructions of this kind tends to contain elements of advocacy on certain sides, but there are no shock discoveries on any conspiracies or accusatory revelations in United 93 - the geo-political dimensions are largely left in the background. Greengrass depicts this event strictly as a series of abstractions unfolding on the radar screens and monitors of air traffic controls. The 91 minute real-time re-enacting onboard United 93 was also improvised entirely based on known facts and deliberately avoids exaggeration of the events. Having said that, the scences on the plane are well considered and respectfully handled by Greengrass.

However, throughout the film, I can't help but wonder what is the intention of United 93, what is Greengrass trying to achieve with this. It's obvious that this film does not carry any sort of political statement, and I am sure this film is not intended as a commercial entertainment eiter. It is until the end of the movie I came to understand the idea of the United 93. Now it was speculated that the original postscrip for the film was "America's War On Terror Had Begun" which was taught to be too political minded. The final version that made it on screen was the rather sober and appropriate "Dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives on September 11th 2001". United 93 intends to dignify those on the flight, ordinary men and women who decided to fight for their live - it captures, without being either manipulative or maudlin, what 9/11 was like. Paul Greengrass has successfuly tells a profoundly emotional story, that is unflinching, and with little dramatic embellishment - which results in a powerful account that is not effected by any sentimentality that often Hollywood tends to do when it comes to depiction of their own history.

This movie will profoundly alter the mood of anybody who live in this generation and has witnessed the September 11 event.

Thank You For Smoking would be the first movie that I watched for this year's Auckland Film Festival, and I have to say, what an opener.

"Thank You For Smoking" - the ambiguous title suggest many different ways to interpret the movie. It could literally meant Thank You For Smoking, or you can read it in a more sarcastic way, intended as a punch line to attack smoker, or you can read it as another documentary slash fictional movie that is aimed in sending out messages about the danger of tobacco. But after watching the movie, the latter one cancel itself out.

Adapted from the same title novel by Christoper Buckley, first time director Jason Reitman delivers an impressive effort - "Thank You For Smoking" revolves around the character - Nick Naylor, the silver-tongued spokesperson for "Big Tobacco" whose gift of the gab and creative use of statistics help him rebrand smokers right as a casualty of political correctness. However, when his young son is getting more interested to find out about what his dad does for living, Nick finds it hard to justify his morally questioned work.

The movies strengh has a lot to do with Aaron's Eckhart's flawless performance. Echkart presents the spin doctor as an obnoxious jerk who you can't help but root for mainly thanks to his slick double speak - He is the perfect leading man who is edgy and has impeccable comedic timing. You can't help but being charmed by his charismatic and wickedly funny sense of humour.

This is unmisakeably a single issue comedy, however it's not one of those conventional comedy that stray blindly into the sentimental. The approach to "Thank You For Smoking" is stylish, dark and smart - it avoids unnecessary emotional tripe. Most of the funnies is not the wordplay itself but rely mostly on the use of rhetorical skills that is often dark and cynical.

One thing that might gave the wrong impression about the movie is the subject matter - the tobacco industry. People are more likely to think that this movie is made to remind people of the harzards of smoking, and targeted mainly to attack smokers. But that subject has been totally avoided by Director Reitman. "Thank You For Smoking" avoids sermonizing about the dangers of smoking or the flaws of political process. This is a rather smart plot - the assumptions that everyone is imformed of the danger of smoking, but the question lies in the choice of smoking or not.

I don't want to give too much away, but I have to say "Thank You For Smoking" is brilliant. It's wickedly funny and relatively fast-paced, which you won't find a single frame in the movie dull. Being smart, but at the same time keep the viewers laughing 80% of the time is not an easy pairing you'll find these days. "Thank You For Smoking" provides thought provoking content delivered through a network of great acting performances that made the film hilarious. It might be one of the best satire out there, and it is unquestionable one of best comedy you'll watch this year. You'll probably put all your assumptions and judgemental aside to watch this movie. You'll be surprised - it's addictive stuff.

The Constant Rider

Its 3 stages in total for me to get from the city back to my house on a bus. Well, in between that, Takapuna would be the first main stop, and to get to Takapuna, it’s 2 stages. It’s like the minimum you have to pay if you want to go across Harbor Bridge.
Sometimes, people just pay for the minimum 2 stages although their house is like 5 fucking stages. It’s just a trick to save money because it costs 2.10 dollars to get to Takapuna, and it will cost additional 1.20 for a stage further. Say if you live in Torbay, its five stages, you only have to pay 2 bucks instead of 6. Usually the lucky one got away with it, if the bus driver didn’t bother to check, but last night wasn’t all that lucky for those Korean guys.

When the bus stops at Takapuna, the bus driver suddenly got up from his driver seat and started asking everybody for their bus tickets. I will never get into trouble because I have an All Zone card, which means I can go anywhere in Auckland, on any Stagecoach bus by paying a monthly fare of 128 Dollars.

It’s like totally worth it for me because if I pay the standard fare, I’d pay 3.60 bucks a trip, so two trips a day is

3.60 x 2 x 30days = 216 dollars just to go to city and back home a month.

Then I go to Ponsonby on an almost daily basis
1.50 x 2 x 20days = 60 dollars to go to Ponsonby

I visit my friends at Herne Bay say 10 times a week
1.20 x 2 x 10days = 24 dollars

Total I would’ve spent on bus fare if I paid the standard fare = 300 dollars.

With an all-zone card, 128 dollars a month, I save 172 Dollars. I could get 17 packets of cigarettes with that money!

But anyway, there were two Koreans in the bus who paid for 2 stages. When the bus driver politely asked them to pay if they want to go further, the refused. So the bus driver asked them to get off the bus. But the refused too.

Then the bus driver started to get a little pissed of and said,

“Well, if you two want to go home, you pay your fare, if you don’t just get off the bus NOW. Stop wasting everyone’s time”

“Well… do we have to pay it now?” asked one of them.

“Well, when else do you want to pay. NOW!!”

“Err… We don’t have any more cash”

“I WILL GIVE YOU 5 MINUTES, GET OFF THE BUS AND GET SOME FUCKING CASH OR YOU CAN WALK HOME!” – Actually it’s the last bus of the day.

This is where the problem is – at that time of the night, literally every single shop at Takapuna is closed. The closest ATM machine is like 3 blocks away from the main stop. So the two guys had to run 3 blocks to get the money. It was over 5 minutes when the bus driver started yelling from outside the bus to the guys who were quite some distance away.

“HURRY THE FUCK UP!!!”

The guys were running.

“If you want to go home next time, pay your fare. It’s not fair to everyone else.”

The thing is, why would people do such thing. I mean it’s fucking humiliating. I bet everyone on the bus would be laughing at them. The scene was just fucking ridiculous. At the same time too, I was actually thinking of paying for them, but then I don’t have enough cash on me, so either way, they still had to run to the ATM machine. I just feel bad for those guys being yelled at like that. It’s just embarrassing, but then it’s them to blame because they really should’ve just paid their fare to save them the embarrassment. It’s not the first time I’ve seen people caught red-handed for not paying the right amount of fare, but I’ve never like seen a bus driver like totally lost it and went bezerk. Man he need some sex.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of which, this is why I totally love taking the bus, not like I had a choice anyway because bus rides are never boring. There’s always some little drama going on that, on an unconscious level, made my day so much more interesting.

Like there’s a time, I was taking the NightRider* home; there was this drunk guy in the bus. He was like totally stoned, and sitting just in front of him is a Korean lady. Sometime in the ride, the guy starts getting sick and have white stuff flowing out from his mouth. Eventually he got sicker, and literally has stuff SPRAYING out from his mouth. For the record, I am not kidding with the word SPRAYING. And that poor Korean girl, man she’s got the nastiest stuff on her head. It was just so fucking funny. It’s not like I’m mean or anything, I felt bad for the girl, but omg, the way he threw up, I mean literally just spraying out streams of sickness is just so unfuckingbelieveable. I wish I had a phone that can record videos.

Then there’s that time when I was sitting on a bus literally had its tire on fire.

Of course, that time too, when the bus driver beats the shit out of a high school kid.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then there she goes. I laid my eyes on her about 2 years ago. I was on my way to the city when she got on the bus at Takapuna. It’s impossible to miss her – she has this kinda of aura that sort of makes your world stops and all you can see is her. She had the nicest complexion I’ve ever seen in my life and her hair is strikingly dark, resting effortlessly on her shoulders. She just got my attention. I don’t know what nationality she is but I think she might be Malaysian, ok, I wished she’s Malaysian. She’s not like pretty pretty type. She’s more like quite and sophisticated type that you could just stare at hours after hours and never get bored. Since that very first time I met saw her, I started to catch the bus at the exact time everyday hoping I’d see her but she’s nowhere to be seen.

But then, one night, weeks after that, I saw her again, on my way home from uni. It was the last bus and she was sitting few seats in-front of me, but kinda on the opposite row, which gave me a prefect view of the side of her face. I just stare at her, her hair, her flowy dark black hair – I just stare the entire ride.

I’ve seen her more often these days; most of the tim es are coincidental. Usually I’d see her on the bus 2 or 3 times a week, always sitting on the same spot. Sometimes I’d see her walking around in the city too. Not that I’m a stalker or anything, but she is just so nice to look at. I mean, it’s a fucking half an hour bus ride, and looking at her made the trip so much shorter. I just want to stare at her – just stare at her.

Gosh, she reminds me of Melissa.
*Nightrider is bus services provided every weekends at 1, 2, 3am especially for fucked-up party goers whos friend can't stay sober enough to drive them home. I sometimes take the NightRider because I can stay at Uni a little longer and still can go home and get some sleep. It's totally cool, but it also can be a nightmare ride. People in the bus are usually inconsiderate drunk fucks.

It's EMO Now Or Never.

Emo from the UK just sound so like totally alien. I’ve always taught Emo music is like a totally American thing. But anyway, Liberation Transmission is yet just another emo album, but from the UK.

Let’s start this with me saying I am totally biased. I hate emos. They are like just totally wrong in every single way. But I want to review this album anyway, for one apparent reason, because they are emo. There isn’t much to comment on the music because emo music is pretty much identical; it’s not hard to tell, from the lyrics, use of instrument and the arrangement. Emo can only go as far as this. Trust me.

Artist: Lostprophets
Album: Liberation Transmission
Release Date: 26 June 2006
Country: Wales, United Kingdom
Beaker's Verdict: A

Liberation Transmission is just another emo album – nothing groundbreaking. Topic of the songs revolves around teenage problems like breaking up, losing a friend, and wanting to break free, just like any lyrics you can find in any other emo albums. Some lines in the songs are way far out being corny, cheesy and cliché. I mean who hasn’t done lines like “Everybody scream your heart out” or “Give me something to believe in” or “We’re giving up, we’re moving on” Geez, get something original will ya. Also the word “Screaming” seemed to be excessively used throughout the albums. “Screaming” here and “screaming” there. Someone should make it a crime.

Speaking about emo, some of the lines are down right emo. I mean so emo that it gave me Goosebumps. For example, we have lines like

I'm sick of watching my mouth with everybody looking at me
And I'm sick of wasting my time, this city offers nothing for me

Everybody’s Screaming

And there's no destiny when everyone's your enemy
Take your jealous heart and cast it into stone

- Broken Hearts, Torn Up Letters And The Story Of A Lonely Girl

Yesterday I lost my closest friend
Yesterday I wanted time to end
I wonder if my heart will ever mend
I just let you slip away

- 4AM: Forever

Save your sympathy
Who do you think you're fooling?

A Town Called Hypocrisy

See what I mean, it’s corny, way beyond Emo. It’s not that I think the lyrics are bad or anything but I mean I hate it when some people just made up their lyrics, the originality of their lyrics. I mean, Liberation Transmission has 12 fucked up emo songs, am I supposed to believe there Prophets has gone through those moments in their life, like losing a friend at 4am, or shouting in the rooftops, or looking at the world with bloodshot eyes? Give me a fucking break.

Even some of the song titles are fucking ridiculous. “Can’t Stop, Gotta Date With Hate” “Always All Ways (Apologies, Glances And Messed Up Chances)” Does anyone don’t find that funny? Not only that I find funny. The singing is a fucking joke – the fucking uber- clichéd elements vocals like uhhh’s, aaahh’s, Wooahaooo’s are, again overdone in some of songs, and it is fucking annoying.

As for the rating, I will give it a fucking A because I have to confess, despite the clichés, despite the corniness, this album contains 12 singles that every emo band wished they’d written. No shit. Each song are catchy at their own right, although they sound the same one after another, but hey, it’s a market for trouble teenage girls and teenage boys, as long as there’s someone shouting at them, this album is a market guarantee.

Artist: Taking Back Sunday
Album: Louder Now
Release Date: 25 April 2006
Country: New York, United States
Beaker's Verdict: C

Emo music is like the opposite of boy bands. Girls from happy family bought boy band’ records while troubled teenage girls and guys who thought they should be girls bought emo records. It’s as simple as that. Emo music is like totally overrated. You know, they are all the same, every single fucking band is the same, the sing the same tunes, they sing about the same shit and they dress the same.

The only thing that’s great about emo bands is that they have like created 12 different ways to say “I’m depressed, and I wanna die” in each song without sounding too similar. Well done.

If you’re feeling bored and need an album that can fucking cheer you up, this is the right one to get. It’s so pathetic that it’s funny. I don’t see how one could possibly relate to the lyrics. It’s just so god damn stupid. Trust me, life is much more than that.

But then, back to my point, emos are fucking useless bunch of immature kids who don’t appreciate their fucking life, who took for granted what they have. They are fucked up attention seekers who lead a perfect life, but decided to throw it a way, and to think that they are fucked up depressed useless son of a bitch. They probably would never realize how lucky they are to have a mother who went through hours of labour pain just to give birth to them, hoping they’d grow up to be someone useful instead of some fucking little pricks. And I probably bet they’d never understand the sacrifice their parents made to give them a home, put them through school and the endless love they showed.

You guys should be ashamed of yourself.

Appreciate you parents while they’re still here you little fuckers.

Just as you thought I was speaking metaphorically.

::My Latest Novel – Wolves [2006]

Artist: My Latest Novel
Album: Wolves
Release Date: 07 March 2006 Worldwide
Country: Glasgow, Scotland

It’s rare, that one can listen to an entire album without skipping any tracks that isn’t that appealing. And it is more likely to happen when you just got a brand new album, from a fucking new band that you have never heard of, and had no idea what their music are like. However, this is not the case with Wolves, the debut album from the Scottish five-piece, My Latest Novel. From the beginning to the end, every second is worth listening to, but that is not to say there are no dull moments.

No bands can escape from being compared to their peers and their seniors. My Latest Novel has been dubbed the Scottish Arcade Fire and has been compared to Belle and Sebastian, which is slightly uncomforting. I do agree to a certain extent, maybe it’s the violin that happen to appear in every single song, maybe it’s their style as art-rockers, that draws the similarity with Arcade Fire. But, I mean you have to be good enough to pull this shit off, and I think My Latest Novel is fucking brilliant.

"Ghost In The Gutter" is a grand opener for My Latest Novel first timers. It starts of pretty slow but gradually builds up in volume – applying largely cello, violin and drums, this song is mellow but explosive at the same time. “Learning Lego” works in a similar way – kicks off with slow acoustic guitars with layering of vocals – this song finally explodes in the last 30 seconds with heavy measured drumming and children’s choir. The first single off Wolves, “Sister Sneaker, Sister Soul” is a mellow love song which is arguably the best song off this album. “Wrongfully, I Rested” is another heart breaking ballad off this album that is hard to miss out.

My Latest Novel’s story is plain in simple – their intention is to tell stories with their songs, wrapped up in mellow but haunting melodies – weaving of violins, cello and vocals are the main elements at work and quite frankly, they pulls it off perfectly. There is something agonizing but at the same time about this album. It is intimate, and genuine, probably the most sincere record I’ve heard. Wolves is a very promising debut album and it’s one of the best this year too.

Beaker's Verdict: A+

::TV On The Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain [2006]

Artist: TV On The Radio
Album: Return To Cookie Mountain
Release Date: 03 July 2006 Worldwide
Country: New York, United States

It’s not often to come across material this neat; Return To Cookie Mountain, a sophomore release from TV On The Radio delivers a genre that is quite hard to file. It’s falling somewhere between tribal and post-punk, but then, it offers so much more than that. Return To Cookie Mountain is an album with soul and rhythm as well as musical beauty – but at the same time, it pushes boundaries and constantly keep the listener of the edge of their seat.

However, there is one thing this album may fall short – it is hardly accessible. While it may offer pretty rhythms, this album is dense, very dense instead. It may be a rewarding listen, but most of the time it’s disturbing. The lyrics are frequently indecipherable, up to a point where you can only enjoy the music more that the actual content of the songs. But then there is no argument here, difficult things are beautiful, and so you can say Return To Cookie Mountain is beautiful to a certain degree, just like a beautiful piece of artwork that the meaning remain mysteries.

TV On The Radio may have just produced one of the best single yet this year, at least it’s already my favourite song. Opening track Playhouses is unarguably the best thing Return To Cookie Mountain has to offer, and it definitely is one of the best track that you’ll hear in the past few years. The upbeat tempo and the urgency of the track are flawlessly executed, and it’s like nothing I’ve heard before. Having said that, Playhouses would probably be the only accessible thing here, the rest of the album did not manage to capture my attention like Playhouses did. They are decent, but at the same time, it’s too hard to comprehend.

In a nutshell, Return To Cookie Mountain is an album from a band that have grown from strength to strength, band with a combination of impressive musical talents so odd that you don’t often find in other bands. Unmistakably, Return To Cookie Mountain sounded more cohesive than their debut, they’ve pushed the boundaries a little, and sometimes it’s thought provoking.

::The Streets – The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living [2006]

Artist: The Streets
Album: The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living
Release Date: 11 April 2006 Worldwide
Country: Brimingham, United Kingdom

This is Mike Skinner, The Streets’ one man show front man’ third release, not the best, not the worst. I might not have came out sounding as fresh as A Grand Don’t Come For Free, but it certainly came off more assured and mature. The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living is an album basically about fame and everything about it, the drinks, the money, the paranoia and etc etc.

The strength of the album is probably the way Skinner have always delivered his songs, sappy, cynical, pathetic, and sometimes annoying but then this is all the reason why people love this record. Because Mike Skinner is low, without self-pity, and lyrically brilliant. This album is the way it is and it’s pretty in your face if I must say. There are many memorable moments to pick up on in this album. The songs are pretty consistent, which means they are pretty well developed and neat, and there aren’t any songs that sound too far out throughout the album flow.

There is no competition that anybody else could pull off something like this, even if they tried. Like his previous album, The Hardest Way To Make an Easy Living takes place entirely in his own head, and with his personal narrative, it’s a brutally honest statement about his life.

But then it all comes down to one question – are the listeners really that interest to know about his life?

Well, it’s either dig it or ditch it.

Beaker’s Verdict: A

::Film School - Film School [2006]

Artist: Film School
Album: Film School
Release Date: 24 January 2006 Worldwide
Country: San Francisco, United States

Third album from San Francisco’s art musicians Film School, the art work is a perfect visual presentation of the band’s music – the striking coloured red blooms fades into a dark background. First impressions of the quintet are extremely good, confidence and self-assured. They deliver an edgy beat, often surrounded by dark aura, revealing a spacious and cinematic texture that stylizes the album. The guitar work is clean and atmospheric, the vocals light and poppy and the rhythms playful to reflective. The only problem with Film School is their lack of originality – their tunes being constantly drawn in comparison with Joy Devision, The Cure and Interpol, but then what hasn’t been done before. However, Film School manages to produce a good album without crossing any boundaries, an album that sound familiar but yet at the same time fresh.

Beaker’s Verdict: B+

::Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere

Artist: Gnarls Barkley
Album: St. Elsewhere
Release Date: 02 May 2006 Worldwide
Country: United States

Everyone has heard of "Crazy", this year’s biggest single yet – is the collaboration work between Danger Mouse and Cee-Le, better known as Gnarls Barkley. Everybody is going crazy for "Crazy", but what about other songs in the album. This by far the most common error that it’s often made in a record. "Crazy" might just be the most ambitious undertakings in St. Elsewhere, while most of the remaining songs remain in a whole different league. The thing is having a song as vibrant and as thick as "Crazy" show the weakness of an album is it wasn’t properly executed. This is what happens with St. Elsewhere. There is a big inconsistency with the arrangements. After "Crazy", which is the second track, the album is going down with each track. At it’s best, St. Elsewhere pushes boundaries, and created a genuine genre blending music that only the both could pull off. It may fall short for some instances but as strange as it sounds, no one could possibly escape the funky rhythm and the fun-loving album art.

Beaker’s Verdict: B-

England: A Shattered Dream

It was 2:45am, just 15 minutes before the match between England and Portugal started. The bar was already crowded by the time we got there. There must be more than hundred people in there, eager, hungry and worried; for the moment of truth. 90 mins into the game, Beckham limped off, Rooney sent off - still no goals - everyone is worried. Some are praying doing the jesus christ cross thing, some are covering their eyes, some have their hands in the air - waving a disbelief, some paced around the already packed room - and I, same old - biting my fingernails non stop throughout the match, while Kyle enjoys the beer and his annoying friend commented on how hot Ronaldo looked - which by the way pissed me off to no end.

And I have a big fucking problem with the Referee - that cunt called Elizondo Horatio, first thing - when the ball struck Velente's hand, the referee waved it off. Then on the 62nd minutes, he gave Rooney a big fuckin red card - That, oh dear I swear to god, is the most memorable moment I've ever withnessed. The crowd was quiet, everyone had their hand either covering ther open mouth - in disbelief, or covering their eyes - in horror. That, perhaps is one of the most shoking and controversial moments of World Cup 2006. People said Rooney's temper is going to cause him trouble, if he don't start to control it - and there you go, right in our face. Who would've thought. I was as shocked as everyone else in the room. I almost had tears in my eyes. In that very second, it's like my heart skipped a beat. Maybe I am biased but the truth it - that scenario was just so unfuckingbelieably rediculous. Just a few little pushes and a fucking red card. Hello mr. Referee?? , boys will be boys and in this fucking male-dominated game, a few pushes worth a fucking red card? Come on. I really don' t think that it was the clash with Carvalho that caused it. I believe it was something Ronaldo had said to the referee that caused Rooney to burst. He must've thought "hey, I thought we're teammates" Lol - it's sad but true. I bet Ronaldo is hated by most Man U fans now - including me.

As for Rooney, it doesn't really matter anymore. He's been there, played with his heart and everyone can see that. He is still my HERO and everybody's hero I guess; when he was redcarded, there was like a surge of emotions going through everyone that was there, like a invincible connection-a total shock mixed with disappointment and sympathy. Despite his irrational outburst, he has got what it takes, that is really the only thing that mattered, 4 years later, I am sure we will see him leading England to victory.

Also I bet everyone caught the off-field moments of Beckham on the bench, crying or more like yearning - whatever. That was a moment too. I don't really know what happened there, but it was pretty heartbreaking to see that.

So after 40 years, the dream is once again shattered. It was so close. So so so so close it's crazy. It's just fucking unfair this game had to end with penalty - Throughout the 120 minutes, England's performance was far off better than Portugal, despite the fact that they are one man down, they manage to deliver a wonderful performance. With the disadvantage of loosing first Owen, then Beckham, then Rooney they continue to defend and attack, creating opportunities at the same time breaking down the opponent's attack; could we, supporters expect more? No. They've played well - it's just so fucking unfair.

And to Portugal, you guys played well.
Well FUCK YOU, YOU LUCKY SON OF A BITCH!

POST-MATCH

While we were walking home, we stopped by the caravan that sells burger to ofcourse get some burger - and what a sight. A bunch of blonde girls wearing England jersey - were sitting beside the road, outside the bar crying. Then a few guys with the heads down smoking. Some had tears in their eyes - like Terry above. It's hard to describe. The mood and atmosphere is probably like 40% of the sorrowness when Pricess Diana died. Maybe more. Lol

Can't STOP!

LAST SHOUT-OUT BEFORE I'M GONE TO WATCH THE GAME- ENGERAND ENGERAND!!!!!!!!!!

lame as- sorry can't help it, IT'S MY FUCKING BLOG!!!!!!!!!!!. I'm going crazy

Go ENG-GE-RAND!

People say this year the English team is the golden generation; with Rooney's performance with the Red Devils, he has became one of the fast rising football cult hero that everybody loved and combined with Michael Owen (not anymore), the front line is untouchable. The again, people say Engrand have the lady luck this year because - 40 years ago in 1966, when they won their only world cup title, the were drawn in together with a South America team, a CONCACAF team and a European team in the first round - just like this year. It may sound totally absurd, but anything that can draw a connection line for Engrand to winning the crown this year is acceptable.

So it's a more or less an hour before the game starts, again, one nostalgic moments back in 1966's semifinal, when Engrand beat Portugal 2 - 1. Same as last match I am ever more nervous than ever because this is going to be absofuckinglutely amazing, and I bet my life on it THAT:

ENGRAND WILL WIN!
